Big Conservation Challenges Need Even Bigger Solutions: Creating a Mega Reserve

Play Video

Fences are OK for security in general, but they’re not great if you’re an elephant or leopard in the Addo National Park or Great Fish Nature Reserve. They get in the way, especially when you’re trying to migrate to greener pastures or find a suitable mate.

They negatively impact biodiversity, which means fewer healthy specimens of the wild critters we all love. We must create larger, free-flowing habitats for wildlife numbers to rehabilitate and increase.

Our mission is to build the Bushman’s River Wildlife Underpass and allow the free movement of animals under the national road. This will kickstart the vision of a ‘mega reserve’ with existing infrastructure running through it.

How Your Entry Helps Our Wildlife

Despite the incredible work done by so many, it’s still tough out there for our horned friends (and other wild animals). Misleading stats show an improvement in the amount of rhino deaths. The truth is a little more uncomfortable though.

Poaching numbers are only “going down” because there are fewer rhinos left to kill, so they’re harder to find in the wild. Anti-poaching remains critically important, but we need to find more innovative ways to restore wildlife numbers. In short, it’s about growth.

Anti-poaching by the People for the People: Rethinking Rhino Conservation

If we want vulnerable and cash-strapped communities to be part of the conservation solution we must make it worth their while. Armed anti-poaching units may be necessary for some time still, but they’re seriously expensive. We have to find and support more sustainable long-term solutions.

Our goal is to fund a Rhino Ranger Programme that helps locals to make an income by protecting our wildlife and be a part of the conservation economy.

The programme will provide financial incentives for people to look after the natural environment. It’s how lasting conservation gets, and stays, done. By training and equipping savvy women that live in and around wildlife reservations to become rangers, they get to safeguard their own futures by adopting responsibility for our rhinos.
