The Eastern Cape has an incredible conservation success story, and even more potential.

You can be part of ensuring this potential is realised by running the 2023 edition of The Be Moved Safari Marathon, on May 27^th

THE RUN

The 2023 Be Moved Marathon has three routes of ~40km, 20km and 5km on the Big 5 Amakhala Game Reserve! Terrain is mostly jeep track so both road runners and trail runners will enjoy the full experience.

Final routes and distances will only be decided on the morning of the event.

Expect adventure! The 2023 Be Moved marathon had lots of excitement – all potentially part of your experience running on a big 5 reserve.

So don’t plan to run your personal best, there will be plenty of distractions. And our aid stations are run by the lodges who provide 5-star refreshments on the route.

RUN WITH THE NEW RHINO RANGERS

In the 2022 Rhino and Restoration Challenge, runners from across the globe came together to fund the training of 5 youngsters from the community – as rangers to be employed in the anti-poaching units of Amakhala, Kariega and Lalibela Game Reserves.

In 2023 these 5 excited Rangers will join the runners at The Be Moved Safari Marathon

THE FOCUS IN 2023

The dream to allow animals to move freely across greater areas of the Eastern Caoe requires safe navigation of exisiting infrasructure such as national roads.

The 2023 Marathon is focussing on raising the funds required to build the Bushmans River Wildlife Underpass – so that lions, elephant, zebra and all of the other creatures, large and small – can safely cross the N2 national road.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

The safety and security of our runners and our team is always our top priority. We are supported by dedicated conservationists and rangers with generations of experience and knowledge of the environment. The following support protocols will be in place:

The final routes will only be determined on the day, and may be amended mid-run if necessary.
The reserve manager will be in full control of the day’s proceedings, and will pause or halt the runs if there is a threat to either runners or wildlife.
Helicopters will be on hand to support the teams on the ground.
Strategically placed game viewers will monitor game movement.
Every aid station will have at least 1 first aid qualified game ranger, and two first aid crews will be on hand at all times.
Food, water and sports drinks will be available at every aid station.

THE LODGES

Fall asleep to the sound of lion roaring or the lonesome call of the hyena. Relax by the pool and enjoy a drink after an early morning adventure in an open game-viewing vehicle. Take in the views from the deck, enjoy a private candlelit dinner under the stars, or gather around the fire as your senses absorb the sights and sounds of the African bush.
