RUN WITH THE RANGERS

Run for the Rhino with the Rangers protecting them

27 MAY 2023

2022 - A RUN TO REMEMBER

In 2022 the run was known as the Addo2Fish Marathon.  We had 40mm of rain the day before the run – then on the day lions, bufflao and elephant impacting the route and ensuring runners had a genuinely wild time.

RUN WITH THE RANGERS

In the 2022 Rhino and Restoration Challenge, runners from across the globe came together to fund the training of 5 youngsters from the community – as rangers to be employed in the anti-poaching units of Amakhala, Kariega and Lalibela Game Reserves.  They graduated on 12 February 2023 and have taken up positions in the AP Units on Amakhala, Kariega and Lalibela Game Reserves.

They have started out during the worst poaching on record in the Eastern Cape.  After 4 poaching free years, 13 rhino have been killed by early March.  This is already double the total of any previous years. You will run with these new Rangers in support of them and the people of Amakhala and Eastern Cape conservation.

THE RUN

The 2023 Be Moved Marathon has three routes of ~40km, 20km and 5km on the Big 5 Amakhala Game Reserve! Terrain is mostly jeep track so both road runners and trail runners will enjoy the full experience.

Final routes and distances can only be decided on the morning of the event, but the plan has you running past the Rhino Memorial at God’s Window, along the ridge before dropping down into the Langkloof, only to climb Skilpad (yes, tortoise road) to Aloe Point before descending the Witpad.  Runners missed this climb in 2022 as two female lions decided to take the action in from the top of Witpad.   You’ll stop in at The Oasis at Woodbury Tented Camp before running through the Bushman’s River where the wildlife underpass will be built.  20km runners will head for a cold beer while the 40km crew head onto Carnovondale to compare their speed to the resdient cheetah coalition.  A climb to the ruins before a fast flowing descent to the finish in the river bed, that is sadly dry due to the ongoing drought.

Expect adventure! Don’t plan to run your personal best, there will be plenty of distractions. And our aid stations are run by the lodges who provide 5-star refreshments on the route.

THE WEEKEND

Big 5 Game drives and sundowners. Nights under the stars, falling asleep to the sound of lion roaring or the lonesome call of the hyena. All with a little zing to it thinking about being out there on foot.

There will be time to relax by the pool and take in the views from the deck, and gather around the fire to celebrate.  Surrounded by the sounds of the African bush, that you will have a deeper connection with.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

The safety and security of our runners and our team is always our top priority. We are supported by dedicated conservationists and rangers with generations of experience and knowledge of the environment. The following support protocols will be in place:

  • The final routes will only be determined on the day, and may be amended mid-run if necessary.
  • The reserve manager will be in full control of the day’s proceedings, and will pause or halt the runs if there is a threat to either runners or wildlife.
  • Strategically placed game viewers will monitor game movement.
  • First aid qualified game rangers, and a specialised Emergency medical crew will be on hand.
  • Food, water and sports drinks will be available at every aid station.
